Dr. Matias’ Approach
My approach to patient care has always been grounded in the importance of understanding your personal history, understanding how you came to be you while respecting your willingness to entrust me with your history and your struggles. After I understand, as best I can, who you are and how you got to this point in time, I commit to helping you and your family recognize your strengths, bolster your level of optimism, overcome depression, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and the chaotic feelings that come with feeling misunderstood and alienated from others. Together, we can do this.

About Dr. Matias
I was born and raised in New York City; I attended the Bronx High School of Science and graduated from Brown University. I obtained my doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and completed postdoctoral training at the internationally recognized Menninger Clinic and Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. I have provided compassionate mental health care to our northwest Indiana community for the last 25 years.
I have offered my expertise in a variety of roles, including as a private practitioner providing psychotherapy and as the head psychologist at Porter Starke Counseling Center, providing compassionate mental health services for seniors, the disabled and others needing care. I worked in the state prison system developing mental health services for the mentally ill who are incarcerated; I also provided care for the seriously mentally ill folks who reside in our State Hospital system.
In addition to providing general clinical psychology services to children, adolescents, and adults, I am a board-certified Transgender Care provider and provide care for those in the LGBTQ+ community. I have provided mental health awareness training and suicide prevention training for law enforcement, correctional and state employees and I provide forensic assessments for the Indiana courts.
My wife and I live in Michigan City where we enjoy family time, biking, cooking, gardening and simple joys. Between us, we have 8 adult children, many beautiful grandchildren, and our dogs- and their dogs! I look forward to getting to know you, sharing my expertise with you, and being as helpful as I can. Bright days are ahead.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with your care.”
